Read, also, his description of the lives of those amongst the Jews who led a life of contemplative or active philosophy, the Essenes[562] and Therapeutae. The latter not only built monasteries and holy places (_semneia_, to use their own word), but also laid down the rules of monasticism followed by the monks of the present day.
