_Sir_,--I shall be better enabled to answer your letter about "certain mysterious occurrences," of which you desire an explanation, when you inform me explicitly (and I request you will do this) what _are_ the mysterious occurrences to which you allude.

The chirography of the Ex-President is legible--but has an odd appearance, on account of the _wavering_ of the capitals and long letters. The writing is clear, somewhat heavy, and _picturesque_--without ornament. Black lines seem to have been used. A margin is preserved to the right and left. The proportion of the letters is well maintained throughout. The paper common, and wafered.
