Chapter XCV: Act I

Text size

SC. 1. "They please us well. Lord Marquess, kneel _thee_ down."

* * * * *

"And hath his Highness in his infancy
_Been_ crowned in Paris, in despight of foes?"

Capell also added _Been_.

* * * * *

SC. 3. "That my mistress was? No forsooth."

For 'mistress' Malone very properly read _master_. (See on Tam. of Shr. i. 2.) In the Contention the only word used here is _master_.

* * * * *

"God and King Henry govern England's realm.
Give up your staff, sir, and the King his realm."

One of these 'realms' must be wrong. (Introd. p. 60.) Johnson proposed _helm_ for the first; I make that change in the second. "And you yourself shall steer the happy _helm_" (i. 3).

* * * * *

"She's tickled now; her fume _now_ needs no spurs,
She'll gallop fast enough to her destruction."

The 2nd folio reads '_can_ need'; 'fast' is Pope's correction for _far_ of the folio.
