The mystery road

Original author: E. Phillips Oppenheim
"The mystery road" by E. Phillips Oppenheim is a novel written in the early 20th century. It promises a Riviera-set blend of romance, class tension, and intrigue as a French peasant girl, Myrtile, flees a forced marriage and is taken under the wing of the charming aristocrat Gerald Dombey and his steadier friend Christopher Bent, while the enigmatic Pauline de Ponière and her austere companion hint at hidden identities and political shadows. Expect a love triangle amid Monte Carlo’s glitter, with moral choices and mystery tightening around the principals. The opening of this novel follows Myrtile, who escapes her stepfather’s plan to marry her to the coarse innkeeper Pierre Leschamps and, by chance, meets Gerald Dombey and Christopher Bent, two Englishmen who whisk her to Monte Carlo and find her lodging. Gerald’s family (Lord Hinterleys and Lady Mary) are wary, and that night in the Sporting Club Gerald becomes fascinated by the incognito beauty Pauline de Ponière. The next day Gerald tries to remake Myrtile at a couturière’s, but Christopher insists on practical clothes and a respectable path, even as Pauline herself appears and remains beyond reach. At Pauline’s villa we glimpse boredom and secrecy, talk of an ally named Zubin and a prisoner, Stepan, suggesting exile and political stakes. Pauline allows Gerald only a clandestine drive and forbids introductions, keeping her distance. Meanwhile Christopher urges Myrtile to protect herself or even leave for England; she refuses, dreaming of a supper party with Gerald, only to see him driving Pauline.
