Chapter I: The Botched Ritual
The autumn wind swept through the hidden house, rattling the windows of Number Twelve Grimmauld Place. Harry Potter sat on the floor of the Black family library surrounded by ancient tomes, their pages were yellowed with age. The open tomes revealed diagrams of complex spell work that would make most wizards heads spin.
It had been two years since he had faced Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Two years since he had died and returned. Two years of peace or what passed for peace in Harry Potter's life.
He ran a hand through his hair, longer now and tied back at the nape of his neck, his green eyes holding the weight of experiences few could comprehend.
"Kreacher," he called, not looking up from the ancient runic text before him.
The old house-elf appeared with a crack. While still stooped and wrinkled, Kreacher had transformed over the years. He wore a clean pillowcase emblazoned with the Black family crest, and a miniature replica of Regulus Black's locket hung around his neck.
"Master calls Kreacher?" the elf croaked.
"Tea please. And have there been any messages?"
"The wolf's cub and his grandmother visited while Master was studying. Kreacher told them Master wasn't to be disturbed. The bushy-haired friend of Master left another package." Kreacher pointed to a parcel wrapped in brown paper sitting on a side table. "She says these are the last books Headmistress McGonagall could spare from the restricted section."
Harry nodded, pushing himself to his feet. "Thank you, Kreacher. I'll take the tea in the study."
The house-elf disappeared with another crack, and Harry picked up the package from Hermione. A note was attached in her precise handwriting:
Harry,
McGonagall says these are the last ones she can lend without raising questions from the Board of Governors. The one on top is particularly rare - it contains Rowena Ravenclaw's theories on magical barriers. I have marked a few sections that might help with your research on undetectable extension charms.
Ron and I miss you. Molly asks about you constantly. I understand why you have chosen to isolate yourself, but we still miss you.
It’s been two years Harry. It's time to step back into the world.
With love,
Hermione
Harry sighed and he tucked the note into his pocket. Hermione meant well. But she didn't fully understand. It wasn't just about his safety. In the months following Voldemort's defeat, Harry had become a target for every dark wizard or witch with something to prove. Three assassination attempts in the first year alone had proven without a doubt that normal life is nothing but a dream for him.
But there was more to his self-imposed exile than self-preservation. After the deaths of Sirius, Fred, Remus, Tonks, and so many others Harry had found himself adrift. The purpose that had driven him since he was eleven years old had been fulfilled. The prophecy had been realized. What was he meant to do now?
While helping to restore Hogwarts, Harry had discovered Dumbledore's private collection of books on advanced magical theory. He had immersed himself in studies that went far beyond the Hogwarts curriculum. What had begun as a distraction had become an obsession. There was so much magic he didn't understand, so much to learn and master.
So he had taken refuge in Grimmauld Place, left to him by Sirius. He converted the once gloomy house into a sanctuary for learning. The Black family library, with its collection of rare and often forbidden magical texts, became his refuge. Supplemented by books from Hogwarts and occasionally from Hermione's travels to international magical libraries, Harry had spent the last two years expanding his magical knowledge beyond what most wizards achieved in a lifetime.
In the study, Kreacher had laid out a tea service on the desk. Steam rose from the china pot, scenting the air with bergamot. Harry unwrapped Hermione's package, revealing three books bound in leather so ancient it had hardened like wood. The top one, as Hermione had mentioned, bore the Ravenclaw eagle on its spine.
His gaze fell on the traveling trunk in the corner of the room. It had been packed for weeks now, ready for his departure after the memorial service. Asia first, then the Americas, Africa, and anywhere else his research took him. The world was vast, there was so much to learn that couldn't be found in books.
Harry took a sip of tea and opened Ravenclaw's book.
Two weeks later, Harry boarded a plane from Heathrow Airport.
-----
Three years had passed since Harry Potter had disappeared from Britain. Occasional reports surfaced - a dark wizard in Bangkok defeated by a mysterious foreigner, an ancient temple in Peru suddenly accessible after being hidden for centuries by ancient wards, a cursed village in Uganda freed from generations of suffering. But the man himself remained elusive, traveling under various disguises and false identities.
Few would recognize the sun-darkened skin who stepped off the Muggle ferry in Dover. He wore simple clothes - jeans, boots, and a worn leather jacket that had seen better days. A backpack hung from one shoulder, containing everything he owned thanks to an undetectable extension charm of his own design. His wand was holstered against his forearm in a quick-draw holster.
Harry breathed in the familiar English air, feeling a strange mix of nostalgia and apprehension. His travels had been productive beyond his wildest expectations. He had studied with Mayakaras in Nalanda, dueled with martial wizards in Tibet, and deciphered ancient magical texts in Egypt. His magical skills and knowledge had grown exponentially, but he also understood that what he knew was nothing, and there was still so much to learn.
He had also neutralized twenty one dark wizards and seven dark witches across four continents. Each confrontation had taught him something new, honed his reflexes, and tested his resolve. None had been as powerful as Voldemort, but several had come close enough to leave their marks on his body. Mayathini, a dark witch from South India gave him a scar along his jawline, which is now as prominent as the famous lightning scar in his forehead. She was also a parselmouth, The cutting spell she cast in parseltongue nearly decapitated him. But he prevailed and defeated her.
Now he is home, the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts is approaching. He did not attend for the past 3 years, He had written to Hermonie and promised her that he will not miss this year.
He Apparated from Dover to Hogsmeade, appearing in an alley behind the Hog's Head Inn. Harry slipped inside, keeping his head down as he approached the bar.
"Room for the night," he said quietly, pushing a few Galleons across the sticky surface.
The barman, brother of Albus Dumbledore, nodded without looking up. "Top of the stairs, last door on the left. Name?"
"Evans," Harry replied, using his mother's maiden name as he often did when traveling.
He took the key and climbed the narrow staircase to his room. It was small and shabby, but clean enough. Harry set down his backpack and removed the transfigurations that altered his appearance. The tan faded, and his scar- both of them - became visible once more. He ran a hand through his hair, now back to its natural black, and sighed at his reflection in the mirror.
Tomorrow he will see them all again. Ron and Hermione, who had married two years ago according to Hermione's letters. Ginny, who had become a star Chaser for the Holyhead Harpies after graduating from Hogwarts. The rest of the Weasleys, Neville who has completed his mastery in Herbology, Luna had taken over as the editor of Quibbler, and all the survivors who had fought alongside him. And they would remember those who couldn't be there, those who gave their life so that Wizarding Britain could be free from the tyranny of a madman.
Harry’s thoughts were interrupted by a tap at the window. A tawny owl perched on the sill of the window, holding a sealed envelope in its beak. Harry opened the window and took the letter, he offered the owl a treat from his pocket before it flew away.
The seal on the envelope was the insignia of the Minister for Magic. Harry broke it open.
Harry,
I know we had decided to meet only in the ceremony and I respect your desire for privacy, but I must insist on meeting before tomorrow's ceremony. The Hog's Head at midnight. I'll come alone.
Kingsley Shacklebolt,
Minister of Magic.
Harry checked his watch. He had four hours until midnight. Enough time to rest and prepare. He looked around his room, started casting various protection and alarm charms, and stretched out on the bed, wand in hand, and closed his eyes. Years of traveling in dangerous territories had taught him to take rest when it was available. He had learned protection charms out of necessity, they have saved his life many times. He drifted off to sleep.
At midnight, the detection and protection charms he had cast alerted him of a small shift in the magic around his door. It was subtle. Someone had cast a silencing charm on the corridor. Harry was on his feet instantly, wand raised, only to lower it when Kingsley's familiar knock sounded.
He opened the door to find the Minister for Magic, with more gray in his hair than when Harry had seen him before. Kingsley wore plain dark robes.
"It's good to see you, Harry." Kingsley clasped Harry’s hand firmly.
"You too, Minister."
"Just Kingsley, please. Especially here." He entered the room, looked around and blinked for a moment. He cast a few additional privacy charms, not as powerful as the ones Harry cast though.
"I'll be direct," Kingsley said. "We've been tracking increased activity among former Voldemort supporters for months. Nothing organized enough to be called a movement, but concerning nonetheless. Intelligence suggests they may be planning something for tomorrow's ceremony."
"Do you have names?" Harry asked.
"Some confirmed, others suspected." Kingsley handed over a folded piece of parchment. "Rookwood is still at large, as are both Carrows. Thorfinn Rowle was spotted in Knockturn Alley last week. Theo Nott and Millicent Bulstrode have been gathering ingredients for complex potions - nothing illegal in itself, but suspicious given their family histories."
"We've enhanced security measures significantly. The grounds will be under protection spells similar to those used during the Triwizard Tournament. Every attendee will be screened. All staff have been vetted."
Harry nodded slowly. "I'll be there. But not as an honored guest sitting on the platform. I'll work with your security team, keep watch from the perimeter."
Kingsley looked as though he might argue against this, but he thought better of it. "Very well. Report to Auror Robards at dawn. He'll incorporate you into the security plan." He stood, preparing to leave. "And Harry? It really is good to have you back."
After Kingsley departed, Harry unfolded his invisibility cloak from his backpack. Despite years of use, it remained as perfect as the day he had inherited it. Tomorrow, it will prove useful once again.
-----
Hundreds of witches and wizards had gathered in the Hogwarts grounds for the ceremony. The castle had been fully restored, though one could spot small differences and dents in the stonework, a chilling reminder of the battle. By the lake, multiple rows of white chairs were set up facing a marble monument etched with the names of the fallen.
Harry moved through the crowd under his invisibility cloak, watching. The security measures were impressive. Aurors positioned strategically throughout the grounds, magical sensors detecting dark objects, identification verification at every entrance. But Harry had learned never to rely solely on official protections.
Harry had chosen a vantage point with a clear view of the platform where the speakers are seated. McGonagall was already seated, she sat straight-backed, looking dignified in emerald robes. Beside her Kingsley sat, he was deep in conversation with an elderly wizard whom Harry didn't recognize. Other familiar faces dotted the rows of chairs professors, Order members, and former classmates.
He saw Ron and Hermione, walking hand in hand toward the front rows. Ron had filled out with muscles, his lanky frame is now more solid. Hermione looked mostly the same like he remembered, though her untamable hair is somehow tamed.
The rest of the Weasley family sat in the row behind them. George, still missing an ear but smiling as he escorted Angelina Johnson. Bill and Fleur with a small silver-haired child between them. Charlie, tanned and weathered from his work with dragons. Percy, looking less pompous than Harry remembered. Arthur and Molly, supporting each other as they had through all their trials.
Harry's breath caught at the sight of Ginny. Her beautiful fiery hair hung loose contrasting with the simple black dress robes she wore. She walked with her head held high despite the solemnity of the occasion with an athletic grace. She had been understanding when he left Britain. Their relationship had been a casualty of his self-imposed exile, though they had parted on good terms. According to Hermione's letters, Ginny was now seeing a fellow Quidditch player, though nothing serious had developed.
The ceremony was scheduled to begin at eleven. At ten-fifty, Harry noticed a disturbance at the eastern perimeter. He saw two Aurors questioning a wizard in dark blue robes. Harry couldn't identify the wizard, but something about the wizard's posture reminded Harry of the Dark wizards he had dispatched in Eastern Europe. He moved closer, still concealed.
"...perfectly legitimate invitation," the wizard was saying, producing a scroll from his robes. "I represent the International Confederation of Wizards. Surely Minister Shacklebolt informed you of our delegation?"
The Aurors examined the invitation, which appeared genuine. One cast a verification spell that showed no tampering. They apologized and allowed the wizard to pass.
Harry followed him, noting how the wizard's eyes darted around the gathering, assessing exits and positions of Aurors rather than looking for a seat. When the wizard passed close to Kingsley, the Minister showed no sign of recognition. It is unusual if this man truly represented the ICW delegation Kingsley had supposedly authorized.
Harry slipped through the crowd until he was directly behind the suspicious wizard. With a silent spell, he checked for concealment charms or Polyjuice effects. Nothing registered, but his instincts screamed danger.
The wizard moved towards the seating area, where he took a position that offered a very clear line of sight to the raised platform. As he sat, his sleeve rode up slightly, Harry could see a faded mark on his forearm. It looked very similar to the Dark Mark. Harry had seen it before in Eastern Europe, the symbol of a group that is a bastardised version of the Death Eaters.
Harry signaled to Robards, who began moving Aurors into position. Harry counted at least fifteen suspected infiltrators now, scattered throughout the gathering. Too many to be coincidence. Something was afoot.
The ceremony began with McGonagall's welcome address. Her voice, magically amplified by the sonorous charm, carried across the grounds as she spoke of sacrifice and hope. Harry kept his attention on the suspicious wizards.
Hermione was the next speaker. Her role in the defeat of Voldemort, her intellect and her work ethic made her a rising star in the Ministry. She championed reforms to protect wizards regardless of their parentage and all magical creatures. In her speech, she expertly used personal memories to call for continued vigilance and for continuous pushback against the ideologies that had fueled the rise of Voldemort.
"We honor the fallen not only by remembering them," Hermonie said in a steady voice suppressing the emotions that threaten to overwhelm her, "but by building and protecting the world they fought and gave their lives for. A world where blood status doesn't determine the worth of a witch or a wizard. Where cooperation between magical races replaces dominance. Where magic serves life rather than death."
As she returned to her seat, Ron squeezing her hand in support, Harry noticed movement among the suspected infiltrators. They were reaching into their robes, positioning themselves strategically. The attack was imminent.
Harry sent his Patronus to Kingsley: Now.
The Minister stood as though to introduce the next speaker. Instead, he raised his wand and shot red sparks into the air. The signal for the Aurors to move. Someone shouted Morsmordre, the Dark Mark hung in the sky above Hogwarts for the first time in five years.
Harry could see an increasing number of witches and wizards with Death Eater masks. It was chaos. Curses flew in all directions as Aurors engaged the attackers. The Auors were handicapped as their focus was split between fighting the Death Eaters and shielding the civilians. Panic spread through the crowd, people were running for cover, but some brave spoils were drawing wands to defend themselves. Most of them were Order members or DA members.
Harry cast a Shield Charm, easily covering a group of children before stunning two masked figures in quick succession. He moved through the battlefield with a practiced efficiency, years of fighting dark wizards has honed his reflexes to near-perfection. He joined Kingsley and Robards in directing the defense.
"Harry!" Ron's voice cut through the chaos. He and Hermione were back-to-back, fighting off attackers with impressive coordination. Seeing his friends in danger he cut through the chaos toward them, deflecting curses and putting down Death Eaters as he went.
A jet of green light narrowly missed Hermione's head. Harry traced its origin to a tall masked figure who was casting with unusual precision and power. With a slashing motion of his wand, Harry sent a deep blue spell that dealt a fatal blow to a Death Eater.
"Thanks!" Hermione shouted, she was defending a group of civilians. The entire Weasley clan was with her.
More Aurors started arriving, responding to the emergency signal sent by the Minister, but the attackers showed no sign of retreat. They seemed to be fighting with increased desperation and a worrying level of dedication.
"They’re targeting Order and DA members!" Neville shouted as he fought his way towards Harry
At the same time, the Death Eaters struck the area where the Weasleys had gathered with a concentrated barrage of spells. Bill, Arthur and Hermonie were maintaining a protective barrier, but it was weakening under the assault. Harry and Neville moved together, reinforcing their shields from different angles.
"Neville!" Harry shouted over the din. "Something's not right. This isn't just an attack!"
Neville nodded grimly. "I know! Some of them are just keeping us busy while others…" He ducked a curse before continuing, "...others are moving toward the forest!"
Harry scanned the battlefield and spotted what Neville meant. A small group of attackers were disengaging and moving towards the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Among them, Harry recognized Theodore Nott and Millicent Bulstrode.
"Keep them safe!" Harry called to Neville, pointing to the Weasleys. "I'm going to find whatever they were up to and stop them."
Before Neville could respond, the area near the memorial stone was rocked by a powerful explosion. When the smoke cleared, Harry saw bodies on the ground—red hair, a black dress robe, a small silver-haired figure. His heart stopped.
"No!" Harry cried. He raced toward the fallen people, ignoring the curses thrown on him. Ron laid motionless, a wound on his temple leaking blood onto the white marble of the memorial. Beside him, Hermione was struggling to rise, her arm hanging at an unnatural angle. And Ginny laid with open eyes no longer seeing. Her hair spread around her like flames.
Harry dropped to his knees beside them, he started casting diagnostic spells with trembling hands. Ron and Ginny showed no signs of life. Hermione's eyes fluttered open with difficulty, focusing on Harry.
"Harry," she whispered.
"Don't talk," Harry urged, while trying to stabilize her injuries. "Help is coming."
But Hermione's gaze was already growing distant. "They said something about... changing everything. A ritual. You have to stop them."
Her eyes closed, her breathing slowed down. Harry looked around desperately for a Healer, all he could see were the scenes of utter devastation. George and Percy lay nearby, also still. A crying Fleur was cradling the tiny unmoving form of her daughter. Only Bill, Arthur, Molly and Charlie remained standing, they were forming a protective circle around their fallen family.
Harry was nearly overwhelmed with grief, but his experience in the Battle of Hogwarts and the past few years helped Harry to focus on the fight, bottling up his emotions. He gently laid Hermione's head down and stood, his magic crackling wildly around mimicking his rage. The Death Eaters in the vicinity backed away, with fear.
"Robards!" Harry shouted to the Head Auror, who was organizing a counter-offensive. "Get everyone out! I'm going after their leaders!"
Harry apparated to the edge of the forest without waiting for a response, following the retreating Death Eaters. The anti-Apparition wards around Hogwarts had fallen during the attack.
He found them in a clearing not far from where he had once walked to his own death. Theo Nott and Millicent Bulstrode stood at the center of an intricate pattern of runes drawn on the forest floor in what looked horribly like fresh blood. Around them, other Death Eaters formed a circle, wands at the ready.
"Potter," Nott called, his voice carrying a manic edge. "Right on schedule. The so-called savior of the Wizarding World has come for his death."
"What have you done?" Harry demanded, his wand trained on Nott.
"What have we done?" Nott laughed, a sound devoid of joy. "We've changed the game. The deaths at the ceremony, each one fed power to our ritual. And now, we'll use that power to ensure the Dark Lord's victory."
"Voldemort is dead," Harry said flatly. "I destroyed every piece of his soul."
"In this timeline, yes." It was Bulstrode who spoke now, her heavy features twisted in a smile. "But time is more malleable than most wizards understand. With enough power. Power drawn from sacrificial death, the past can be rewritten."
Cold understanding washed over Harry. "You're trying to open a temporal portal."
"Not trying," Nott corrected. "We have succeeded. You can’t stop us now. We will warn the Dark Lord of his defeats, of the prophecy, of the boy who would destroy him."
"And all of this…" Harry gestured to the battle behind them, thinking of Ron, of Hermione, of Ginny, of all who had fallen, "...was to power this ritual?"
"We used the deaths of mudbloods and blood traitors to open the temporal portal.." Bulstrode said. "Their worthless blood will help us restore the Dark Lord's rule. The Irony." She laughed like she belonged in an asylum.
Harry had heard enough. He attacked, sending a barrage of spells that scattered the protective circle of Death Eaters. Some fell immediately, others returned fire. Harry attacked with cold precision, his grief overpowering his spells to a devastating effect.
Nott and Bulstrode continued their ritual, ignoring the battle around them. They chanted in an ancient language, the air itself seemed to warp around them with dark magic. The runes began to glow with an unholy light and the center of the circle boiled like bubbling lava.
Harry fought his way closer, felling Death Eaters with Reducto’s and similar spells to a lethal effect. He was determined to interrupt the ritual before it could be completed. A curse caught him in the shoulder, spinning him around, but he maintained his footing. Another sliced across his leg, but he barely felt it through his focus on reaching the center.
He pushed through the Death Eaters' defenses. The ritual circle was beginning to pulse now, the air within it distorting like a mirage. Harry could see… something forming… a tear in the air… a gap in reality itself.
"Now!" Nott cried, raising a ceremonial dagger. "With this final sacrifice, the path is opened!"
Harry lunged forward, crossing the boundary of the ritual circle just as Nott brought the dagger down toward his own heart. The dagger pierced through Nott’s chest just as Harry tackled him.
The magic surged, wild and uncontrolled. The portal, incomplete but powerful, began to collapse in on itself. Bulstrode screamed incantations, trying to stabilize the failing spell.
The distortion spread, engulfing Harry and Nott’s dead body. Harry tried to apparate, but the portal's pull was too strong. The last thing he saw was Neville’s Reducto making quick work of Bulstrode, while simultaneously getting hit by her Bone breaking curse. Harry felt as though he were being forced through a space far too small, every atom of his being stretched and compressed simultaneously. He was no longer conscious.
