Partners of the tide

"Partners of the Tide" by Joseph Crosby Lincoln is a novel written in the early 20th century. Set in a Cape Cod village, it follows orphan Bradley Nickerson as he is taken in by the precise, well-meaning Allen sisters, while the bold Captain Ezra Titcomb and the spirited neighbor girl Gus Baker pull him toward the wider, rough-and-ready life of the shore. Bradley meets Gus Baker—the “dog girl”—and her unruly pack, leading to a school fiasco when a dog hides in the closet, chaos erupts, and Bradley is punished again after a playground fight with teaser Sam Hammond. At home he faces the sisters’ stern disapproval until Gus bursts in to take the blame; even after the Captain counsels patience and obedience, Bradley remains torn, quietly choosing loyalty to Gus over a promise to shun her.
