Chapter I: Preface

A very few words of introduction will suffice for this little book. Its author, Mr. F. Russell, has been known for some time past as one of our most skilful and artistic pipers, and the specimens of his work, which have been shown principally at the Food and Cookery Exhibition, have excited the admiration of the casual spectator, and have received the more solid applause of the judges of the art. The reproductions we give here, though some of them have lost a good deal in losing colour, are certain to please all and will probably excite many to emulate. And these last will find that Mr. Russell is as clear in his instructions as he is artistic in his work. This book ought to do something to extend among the trade the practice of the most fascinating branch of ornamental art—Figure Piping—and it is with that view that it has been produced.
