"A fisher girl of France" by Fernand Calmettes is a novel written in the late 19th century. When a herring “scum” finally appears, a dense fog rolls in; a boat sent to adjust the nets becomes lost, Firmin stubbornly clings to a float, and a thieving Flemish flambart begins stealing the nets. In the mêlée, Firmin is hauled aboard the flambart; the two vessels collide and part, and Florimond, with a damaged bow, refuses Elise’s plea to tack back. The sloop races for home as coastal squalls gather and the dangerous Vergoyer shoals loom, leaving Elise desperate and the crew bracing for the storm.
